“You don’t gotta go to work, work, work, work, work, work, work”. No matter what Fifth Harmony sang in their 2016 smash hit ‘Work from home’, you have got to go to work. Even when you are not physically present at the office. And with all that’s happening in the world today, we are more than happy to share some tips on how to work from home best.
This blogpost is centered around ‘working from home’ and still is ‘location’ our top tip. The location within your home still counts, where you work matters. Even when you don’t head to a separate building for work, it should feel like a separate space with a comfortable chair. A space to work in peace, but also a (metaphorical) door to close at the end of the day.
There is no space for a desk and office chair in your tiny apartment? That’s okay, because there are other possibilities, such as your kitchen table. Sure, you love to cook and your kitchen is the center of your home, but that table could work as a desk at home. Just make sure you close your laptop on time, put it in its sleeve and stored away in your bag. This also counts as closing the door. Et voila, your home desk is suddenly your beloved kitchen table again. So, who’s making dinner tonight?
It is tempting to snooze when your alarm goes off, because you have no commuting time to the office or appointments. But creating and maintaining a schedule is actually one of the most important parts of working from home. Everyone has different preferences and habits, but you know when you are most productive. So schedule your day around those hours. Here are a few more tips, all centered around schedule:
- schedule what you’ll do ahead of time, with
- uninterrupted work in the morning, and
save calls for the afternoon
mark clear breaks in your schedule for others to see
pick a definitive time to end each day
Play pretend with your brain by doing all the same things you do when you leave for the office. Do you usually shower in the morning? Great! Repeat that on the days you work from home. Start with a run or just breakfast and coffee and wear nice clothes, if that is what you do on other working days.
The mental association you make between work and an office can make you more productive, and there’s no reason to lose that feeling when you work from home.
